Jakarta – Prabowo Subianto, who will soon be inaugurated as the President, has expressed his commitment to reducing the Single Tuition Fee (UKT) for public universities. In his upcoming leadership, he will strive to make this a reality.
During an exclusive interview on TvOne titled “Prabowo Subianto Speaks for Indonesia” on Wednesday, (22/5), Prabowo stated, “Especially in state universities, which are funded by public money (state budget), the fees should not be high, if possible, very minimal or free. We have to calculate and work hard for it.”
He also pointed out the shift in the education system since the New Order era, where education has become commercialized and influenced by capitalist values.
“The mindset now is that everything can be turned into a market, even though education is a public good and a social responsibility for a country,” emphasized Prabowo.
Looking ahead, as times continue to change, Prabowo mentioned that the government will explore ways to enhance the education sector.
One initiative expected to boost state revenue significantly is the industrial downstreaming program introduced by President Jokowi.
“It is imperative for us to engage in downstreaming to create added value and enhance our education system,” he affirmed.
