Jakarta – During the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2024 held in Singapore, an interesting moment took place when Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with Timor Leste President Jose Manuel Ramos Horta.
Prabowo and Horta warmly greeted each other and conversed as they walked together to the dinner table on Friday (31/5). Prabowo, dressed in a black suit, was seen laughing, embracing, and patting Horta on the shoulder. The interaction between the two leaders was filled with warmth.
During a Q&A session, Prabowo shared how Indonesia, which previously had conflicts with Timor Leste, has now established a friendly relationship.
“Just imagine, now I am here sitting with Ramos Horta. He even invited me to visit Timor Leste and I am considering attending,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo also mentioned Indonesia’s history with neighboring countries like Timor Leste, Malaysia, and Singapore. Despite past conflicts, efforts have been made to ease tensions.
“We managed to resolve our differences without the involvement of external parties. We have settled disputes with Malaysia and Singapore,” Prabowo stated.
“Now we are like brothers. We are discussing the possibility of constructing a bridge between Singapore and Batam, as well as a bridge connecting Malaysia and Indonesia,” he added.
