LIEUTENANT GENERAL TNI (RET.) HIMAWAN SOETANTO
One of the important lessons I learned from Pak Himawan Soetanto is the value of being close to your subordinates as a commander. He emphasized the importance of a commander being present among his men from morning till night, checking on their well-being and even the smallest details like the quality of their underwear and the condition of their kitchen. Thanks to Pak Himawan Soetanto, I have developed a habit of paying attention to such details and ensuring the welfare of my men.
During my time at AKABRI in 1970, Pak Himawan served as the Deputy Governor in charge of education and training. He was a well-educated individual who spoke multiple languages and had a keen interest in history, particularly military strategies. He had a vast collection of books in his residence and often engaged in discussions about them with me. What struck me about him was his neat appearance, friendly demeanor, and his hands-on approach to leadership, which was a stark contrast to some commanders who lacked combat experience and tended to be distant from their subordinates.
Pak Himawan Soetanto’s practical leadership style taught me the importance of being present with my men and adapting regulations to suit the needs of the unit. He was a respected figure with a long combat experience, and his influence on me was profound. Even after his retirement, I maintained a close relationship with him, and it was a great honor for me to be one of the individuals he wanted to see before he passed away.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL TNI (RET.) SARWO EDHIE WIBOWO
General Sarwo Edhie was a charismatic and well-respected leader known for his hands-on approach to command. As a mentor during my time at AKABRI, he instilled in us the values of perseverance and patriotism, emphasizing love for the homeland and pride in our history. His book, ‘My Life is for the Country and the Nation’, reflected his dedication to serving his country and passing on his knowledge to the younger generation.
My first encounter with General Sarwo Edhie was during my cadet days, where he was already a renowned figure in the military. He was admired for his leadership during critical moments in Indonesian history, such as the G30S/PKI communist coup. His presence as a commander who led from the front left a lasting impression on me and many others, inspiring us to uphold the values of service and sacrifice.
After his retirement, General Sarwo Edhie continued to serve his country in various capacities, including as an ambassador and chairman of a supervisory body. His integrity and commitment to his principles were evident throughout his life, and he remained a respected figure in the military community. His influence on me as a mentor and a role model is something I will always cherish.
GRAND GENERAL TNI (RET.) ABDUL HARIS NASUTION
Having the opportunity to have personal conversations with a key figure of the ’45 generation, Grand General Abdul Haris Nasution, was a privilege and a unique experience. Known for his role in the struggle for Indonesian independence, Pak Nas shared his wealth of experiences, insights, and strategies with me. His deep knowledge of history and languages, along with his commitment to learning and sharing his wisdom, resonated with me deeply.
Pak Nas was a historical figure who paved the way for our nation’s freedom and independence. His discussions on guerrilla warfare tactics, resistance against colonial powers, and other historical events were invaluable lessons that I absorbed as a student of history. His dedication to our country and his passion for knowledge left a profound impact on me and many others who had the honor of learning from him.
