President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, highlighted the importance of the “Bandung Spirit” at the recent BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Indonesia’s commitment to global peace and adherence to international law were emphasized by President Prabowo during the forum, as reported by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto. He reiterated Indonesia’s support for global peace through multilateralism and the importance of following international law, while firmly opposing war and double standards in international affairs.
The reference to the “Bandung Spirit” at the summit was warmly welcomed by the host country, Brazil. Indonesia’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, confirmed that Brazil had already invoked the Bandung principles in its opening statement as the Chair of the summit. President Prabowo’s reminder of the importance of the Bandung Spirit and its relevance within the BRICS forum, especially concerning the Palestinian issue, was well received.
Brazil expressed hope that BRICS could revive the Bandung legacy to further advance the interests of developing nations. This marks Indonesia’s first participation as a full member of the forum, and the President’s focus on the Bandung Spirit highlights the enduring significance of solidarity among developing nations established during the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia.
