Prabowo’s Promise to Crack Down on Companies Cheating Rice Distribution: Rp100 Trillion Lost Annually

President Prabowo Subianto strongly criticized corrupt practices in Indonesia’s rice trade during his speech at the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He vowed to take action against companies that manipulate and increase the price of subsidized rice, which reportedly costs the country up to Rp100 trillion yearly. The President highlighted how various aspects of rice production are subsidized by the government, but some companies repackage the rice as ‘premium’ and sell it at a higher price, which he deemed unfair to the people. He mentioned that 212 rice milling companies have been caught engaging in such practices and emphasized that they must return the illicit profits. Prabowo condemned these practices as criminal acts that not only harm the people but also violate the Constitution. He expressed his determination to address the issue by instructing the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to investigate, prosecute, and confiscate the profits obtained through dishonest means. Prabowo emphasized that his actions are based on the constitutional mandate to control sectors vital to the state, such as rice production, in order to protect the people’s livelihood.
