Amnesty for Hasto and Tom Lembong: Prabowo’s Prerogative for Harmony

President Prabowo Subianto has received praise for his decision to grant amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, which is seen as a step towards national reconciliation. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah commended the President’s swift and thoughtful response to address societal divisions ahead of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations. He highlighted House Speaker Prof. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad’s quick reaction as a signal from the President to promote social harmony and reconciliation, especially with the approaching symbolic date of August 17, 2025. Fahri expressed that President Prabowo’s use of constitutional prerogative is a positive development amidst attempts by certain groups to create disunity. He emphasized the importance of restoring societal harmony and unifying the nation through this decision. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) also approved the amnesty for 1,116 convicted individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, following Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725 issued on July 30, 2025. Amnesty and abolition are both forms of the President’s prerogative rights under the Indonesian Constitution, aimed at eliminating legal consequences from criminal convictions. This move by President Prabowo is viewed as a genuine effort to bring the nation together and promote national unity.
